Guest Photographers: Alan Chin-Lee and Jay Richard (Video)
Alan Chin Lee: a lepidopterist by education and affinity, has pursued butterflies his whole life, as both a scientist and photographer. He has been instrumental in developing butterfly exhibits at Butterfly World and the Florida Museum of Natural History. His photographs capture visitor's attention, engaging them in the subject and inviting them to delve deeper into the exhibit. Alan has also assisted Award-winning photographer, Rick Sammon, in finding and showcasing select butterfly species for his publication, "Flying Flowers." Alan’s passion for photography has been recognized in many publications such as the Kaufman Focus Guides – Butterflies of North America, A Guide to North America’s Bees – The Bees in Your Back Yard, and numerous travel magazines, Scientific Publications and calendars
Jay Richard: In the 1960’s Jay started photographing the nature and wildlife he grew up appreciating. Beginning with film cameras and dark rooms, to point & shoot, then digital cameras and computerized post processing, he was able to document his love of nature through his photography. When he retired after a 45year career as a senior technology executive, it allowed him to focus more of his time on photography. JayHawk Photography was formed in 2013 after multiple request for nature photos, programs, along with photographic excursions for all levels of photographers as well as people who simply enjoy viewing nature in New England and South East Florida. The excursions are limited to 3 or less people, and focus on expanding individual’s wildlife skills on how, when, and where to find wildlife in their natural habitat, offering the opportunity to capture the moment photographically or in one’s mind.

Workshop Leader: Lisa Langell
Workshop Description:
- Aperture, ISO and Shutter Speed confuse so many people who want to improve their photography and move away from Auto settings to do so. Learning Manual Exposure can be intimidating and challenging--and many photographers who teach these skills throw too much at the learner at once, making it all overly complicated and technical for the typical person to grasp.
- Lisa makes it simple, sensible, easy to understand, and actionable. Through a progression of activities, you will go from shooting on Auto, to using Shutter Priority or Aperture Priority, and ultimately to using Full Manual Exposure settings.

Presenter: Cameron Darnell (Hunt's Camera) (Video)
Program Description: Warblers, a group of small insectivorous songbirds native to North America, are diverse, colorful, and photogenic. These exciting birds that can be quite tricky yet rewarding to photograph. Certain techniques--often highly specific to warbler behavior--can give wildlife photographers an edge when attempting to photograph these remarkable birds. In this workshop, Cameron will explain how to approach the challenges of warbler photography and how to create thoughtful, engaging images. He will share descriptions and image examples highlighting various techniques to demonstrate how to photograph warblers.
Cameron Darnell's autobiography: "I just graduated high school, am 19 years old, and enjoy nature, athletics, and music. I got into photography after birding for a while when I saw someone with a lens clicking shots on a bird walk seven years ago. It seemed so fun, so I tried it with a beginner digiscope setup. I was hooked immediately! I love the creative aspect of bird photography, how each viewer sees the scene differently, and can create his or her unique vision of the subject. It’s fulfilling to provide an outlet for visual wildlife conservation as well through my bird photography."

Guest Photographer: Carl Seibert (video)
Carl has had a long career in journalism, as a news photographer, project manager, and photo editor. He fell in love with photography as an adolescent photographing school events with his dad’s Leica, which he stills owns.
As an editor, he became known for reverence for the craft, with a laser focus on honing content to its essential meaning. And cropping really tightly!
He continues to shoot and contributes to a wire service. Since the advent of the pandemic, his work has been focused on an ongoing project documenting nature close to home, now quite literally in his own back yard.
Carl evangelizes the importance of metadata to “empower honest people”, on his blog and YouTube channel, where he mixes advocacy on behalf of content creators with a steady stream of how-to content for photographers, web designers, and other content creators. He believes that communicating meta-information about the ownership and content of visuals is essential to protecting the rights of artists and preserving our visual culture.
He lives and works in South Florida with his wife and a furry management team.

Presenter: Joel Such (Video)
Becoming a masterful bird photographer requires much more than just an understanding of light, composition, and camera settings. Though these three aspects are incredibly important as a bird photographer, the addition of birding and general field skills will enable you to leverage your photographic knowledge to its maximum. In this presentation, we dive into how you can improve your bird photography by learning bird vocalizations, training your eyes to detect movement, understanding habitat associations and behavior, researching your subjects’ life histories, and recognizing environmental clues. Between the artistic and focused mindset of a bird photographer and the field skills of a birder, one can develop a significant advantage in taking stunning photos of a diverse array of bird species. Whether you started out as a birder before pursuing bird photography, or vice versa, this presentation will provide useful tips for how to merge the best of these two mindsets.

If you are a wildlife photographer, chances are that you care about the wild subjects you photograph and want to see them thrive in their natural environment. In this workshop, we will explore how your photographs can help protect species and their habitats by increasing environmental awareness, promoting conservation initiatives, documenting conservation efforts, and inspiring others to join the tide to protect biodiversity. We will cover topics such as capturing photos that tell a story and evoke emotion, crafting meaningful social media captions with a conservation message, documenting a conservation project, and creating a conservation photography project of your own that is both achievable and has the potential of making a positive impact. Photographers play a crucial role in conservation efforts worldwide, and our natural world is counting on more photographers to channel their energy and talent towards making a difference in the world of conservation.

Good photos do not need to be taken with a $10,000 camera setup. Disposable cameras can take some of the most artistic photos possible, at the same level of intricacy as a DSLR. Using a point and shoot is my happy medium, and the capabilities never cease to impress. Salamanders posed on logs, flowers growing on the forest floor, birds perched in trees, soaring on thermals, or foraging on the ground are all common sights through my viewfinder. The secrets to micro to macro point-and-shoot photography are waiting to be shared.

Photography is much more than pointing your camera at a scene and tripping the shutter. Weighing the assorted components within the frame of the viewfinder is important as it impacts the resulting image, and subsequently the viewer. Unlike painters who begin their art with a clean canvas, photographers begin with a canvas fully loaded. Recognizing how to evaluate and isolate the various graphical elements from this filled canvas enables the photographer to create an impactful, visual story.

The photo critique of member’s nature photographs by a professional photographer includes analysis, evaluation, and appreciation of the image. The analysis provides insight on characteristics of the photograph and techniques to improve the lighting, color, cropping, composition, etc. to help members become better photographers. The critique reinforces positive technical and artistic aspects of the image, as well as suggests alternative approaches to improve its technical and artistic value.
The photo critique will NOT include a grade or score of any of the critiqued images. The goal is to learn how our photographs successfully speak to our audience and how we can make them even better.
